Excerpts from the latest in the series of seminars given by Swami Nishchalananda to Sheffield School of Yoga, with some more ‘Dharanas’, practices, from his translation of this Kashmir Shaivism text. You can find out more on this translation and commentary, ‘Insight into Reality’ at the end of this post.
The session starts with a review of the meaning and location of the ‘Dwadashanta’, the energy field surrounding the body. He explains that the practice of becoming aware of this space, or energy, allows insight on a deeper level. So actually it’s something to experience, not grasp with the intellect.
Space and Energy are the prime qualities of this manifest Universe. But as human beings our mind and senses are trained to focus on objectsSwami Nishchalananda
Dharana no. 5 uses the paradigm of the Chakras and the spinal passage, Sushumna, to visualise energy rising and cascading into the external energy field.
Another Dharana, no. 78, is a reflective dharana putting forward the notion that Thoughts are actually an obstacle to fundamental understanding. Swamiji says, ‘When you completely accept this, you will realise your essential nature as Consciousness’.
