There is an interesting philosophical conundrum:
Everything exists in space, but in what does space exist?
This is not only a question in yoga and mysticism, but also a conundrum of science. After all, modern science hypothesizes that the universe was formed out of the so called ‘big bang.’ Before the big bang, apparently nothing existed, not even space; so from where and from what did space come? Reflecting on this type of question constitutes the practice of Gyana Yoga. The fact that space comes into existence – that is, it is created – suggests that it is not a fundamental principle. It comes out of ‘something’. This suggests that there is a Reality more fundamental out of which space arises, together with time and everything else that constitutes the universe in which we live.
